Rolling Bearings: Structure, Function, and Selection Parameters

Rolling bearings are mechanical components that support rotating elements while reducing friction through rolling elements—balls, rollers, or needle rollers—positioned between the inner and outer rings. Choosing the right type depends on the load direction, rotational speed, available space, and maintenance requirements. JFK Group supplies the complete range of industrial rolling bearings: JFK bearings are carefully selected, quality-checked, and backed by technical support. If your requirements go beyond the standard solutions available, we can design a solution based on your specific project.

SELECTION GUIDE

Things to consider before making a choice

The choice of rolling bearing depends on a combination of parameters that interact with each other.

The starting point is always the load direction: radial, axial, or combined. This is complemented by the rotational speed, which determines the most suitable type of rolling element and directly affects service life.

In addition to load direction and magnitude, the variables affecting bearing selection include available space, required rotational accuracy, operating temperature, environmental conditions, and lubrication requirements. In applications involving misalignment between the housing and shaft, self-aligning bearings are the preferred choice, as they are designed to accommodate angular deviations without compromising performance.

Solutions

Find the right solution for your application

01

Do you have a rotating component that needs support?

The optimal solution depends on the load type—radial, axial, or combined—and on the rotational speed. Deep groove ball bearings are the most versatile choice for moderate loads and high speeds; for axial or combined loads, angular contact ball bearings are considered, while cylindrical or tapered roller bearings are the solution for higher loads.

02

Is your shaft subject to misalignment?

When there is misalignment between the housing and shaft, self-aligning bearings are the preferred choice, as they are designed to accommodate angular deviations without compromising performance. Available as self-aligning ball bearings for moderate loads and high speeds, or spherical roller bearings for heavy loads and demanding operating conditions.

03

Do you have limited radial space?

When space is limited, industrial needle roller bearings are the most widely used solution: for the same inner diameter, they offer significantly higher radial load capacity than ball bearings, with a minimal cross-section. Depending on the application, choose drawn cup needle roller bearings, needle roller cages (K/KBK/KZK), or NK/NKI needle roller bearings with IR inner rings. 04

Do you operate in demanding environmental conditions?

Extreme temperatures, moisture, chemicals, or food-processing environments require bearings designed to withstand these conditions without compromising performance. For moisture and aggressive environments, stainless steel ball bearings are the preferred choice; for high-temperature applications, high-temperature ball bearings are the solution.
