Fastening systems: function and selection criteria
Mechanical fastening systems, also known as fastening elements or locking systems, are used to secure, position, and retain components such as bearings, gears, and pulleys on shafts and in housings, preventing axial movement under load or vibration. The choice of the right fastening system depends on the type of mounting surface (threaded or smooth with a groove), the level of precision required, the presence of vibration or dynamic loads, and the expected frequency of installation and removal. Within JFK Group's range of mechanical fastening systems, Datus specializes specifically in standard screws and fasteners, while the other solutions are supplied as part of JFK Group's precision mechanical component range.
JFK Locking rings
Compensation rings made of spring steel for the installation of play-free ball bearings. Seeger retaining rings (or spring rings) made of hard steel for quick axial locking on shafts and in bores.
JFK locknuts
KM locknuts with locking washers, KMT and KMTA precision locknuts with brass set screws, and GUK and GUP self-locking locknuts. The complete range for axial securing on threaded shafts.SELECTION GUIDE
Things to consider before making a choice
The choice between the different fastening system families depends primarily on the type of mounting surface available: a threaded shaft requires a locknut, a smooth shaft with a groove requires a retaining ring, while eliminating axial clearance in a bearing requires a compensation ring.
This is complemented by an assessment of the operating conditions: where significant vibration or dynamic loads are present, self-locking solutions are preferred; where high positioning accuracy is required, dedicated components such as KMT precision locknuts are the ideal choice; for standard screws and fasteners, the Datus range covers all general assembly requirements.
Solutions
Find the right solution for your application
01
Do you need to eliminate axial clearance when mounting a bearing?
When the correct preload of a ball bearing must be ensured by eliminating axial clearance and reducing noise and vibration, spring steel compensation rings are the dedicated solution.

02
Do you need to axially secure a component on a shaft or in a bore?
For quick and secure locking of bearings, gears, and pulleys in external shaft grooves or internal bore grooves, Seeger retaining rings (snap rings) allow fast installation and removal using dedicated pliers.

03
Do you need to secure a component to a threaded shaft?
Locknuts are the ideal solution for axial securing on threaded shafts: KM locknuts for standard applications, KMT and KMTA precision locknuts for high-precision positioning without a locking washer, and GUK and GUP self-locking locknuts for applications involving vibration or dynamic loads.

04
Do you need screws or fasteners for general assembly?
For general threaded fastening of structures and machinery, JFK Group distributes a complete range of screws, nuts, washers, bolts, and other fasteners through its Datus company, in accordance with metric and international standards. Screws Nuts and washers Bolts and studs
