JFK Spherical roller bearings

JFK roller bearings

  • High radial load capacity
  • High misalignment tolerance
  • Tapered bore available

Spherical roller bearings, also known as self-aligning roller bearings or barrel roller bearings, are double-row bearings with barrel-shaped rollers and a spherical raceway on the outer ring. They can self-align and compensate for angular misalignment between the shaft and housing (deflections, mounting errors and structural deformations) without compromising performance. Compared with self-aligning ball bearings, they offer significantly higher radial and axial load capacity, making them suitable for the most demanding applications.

JFK Group offers self-aligning spherical roller bearings with cylindrical and tapered bores (suffix K, taper 1:12 or 1:30). The tapered bore version allows mounting on adapter or withdrawal sleeves on cylindrical shafts, simplifying installation and removal. Bearings are available with lubrication holes and grooves on the outer ring for relubricatable versions, and with integrated seals (suffix 2CS or CC) for protected versions.

Spherical roller bearings are typically used in rolling mills, construction machinery, heavy-duty transmissions, paper machinery and applications with long shafts subject to significant deflections.

Versions

How to choose the right spherical roller bearing

The selection mainly depends on the mounting conditions and the possible need for protection against contaminants. The cylindrical bore version is the standard design; the tapered bore simplifies mounting and removal on cylindrical shafts.

  1. Self-aligning spherical roller bearings with cylindrical bore

Standard version. Available as open bearings with lubrication holes and groove on the outer ring (E) for relubrication, or with contact seals on both sides (2CS) for enhanced protection and lifetime lubrication. Solid brass (MB) or polyamide (TVP) cages depending on the bearing size. Standard version · Relubricable or sealed · Brass or polyamide cages

  2. Self-aligning spherical roller bearings with tapered bore

Tapered bore with 1:12 taper (suffix K) or 1:30 taper (suffix K30) for mounting on adapter or withdrawal sleeves on cylindrical shafts. It significantly simplifies mounting and removal, even in confined spaces or with large-diameter shafts. Sleeves are supplied complete with locking nuts and safety devices. Simplified mounting · 1:12 or 1:30 taper · Adapter and withdrawal sleeves available

Performances

Design and performance features

Self-aligning spherical roller bearings are also known as self-aligning roller bearings because, thanks to the spherical raceway on the outer ring and the two rows of barrel-shaped rollers, they provide self-alignment capability and high load capacity in the presence of significant misalignment.

Benefit

Self-aligning capability

High angular misalignment compensation The spherical raceway on the outer ring allows compensation of significant angular misalignment between the shaft and housing. Spherical roller bearings are suitable when shaft deflections, mounting errors or structural deformations under load are expected.

Benefit

Load

High radial and axial loads in both directions The two rows of barrel-shaped rollers provide high radial and axial load capacity in both directions, significantly higher than self-aligning ball bearings. They are ideal for applications with heavy loads and demanding operating conditions.

Benefit

Lubrication

Relubricatable or lifetime lubricated Open versions with lubrication holes on the outer ring can be relubricated through a grease fitting. Versions with seals (2CS) are lifetime lubricated and maintenance-free.

Benefit

Seal

Open or sealed versions Spherical roller bearings are available as open bearings for applications with controlled external lubrication, or with contact seals on both sides (2CS) for enhanced protection in contaminated environments.

Benefit

Cages

Solid brass or polyamide Solid brass cages (MB) for larger bearing sizes and severe operating conditions, or polyamide cages (TVP) for smaller sizes and higher operating speeds.

Benefit

Internal clearance

CN internal clearance as standard; C3 and C4 clearances available on request Products are supplied with standard CN internal clearance. C3 and C4 clearance classes are available for applications involving high operating temperatures or heavy interference fits.

Mounting

Mounting of spherical roller bearings

Spherical roller bearings are mounted with an interference fit on the shaft. For tapered bore versions, mounting is carried out using adapter or withdrawal sleeves on cylindrical shafts. Sealed versions must not be washed. For applications involving high operating temperatures or heavy interference fits on the shaft, C3 internal clearance is recommended.

Installation Mounting

  1. Direct mounting on the shaft (cylindrical bore)Use a mounting tool that applies the force to the inner ring. Never apply mounting force through the rolling elements. For large bearings, heat the bearing before mounting.
  2. Mounting with adapter sleeve (1:12 tapered bore)For bearings with tapered bore K: quick mounting on cylindrical shafts using an adapter sleeve complete with locking nut and safety device. It also simplifies removal.
  3. Mounting with a withdrawal sleeve (1:30 tapered bore)For bearings with K30 tapered bore: withdrawal sleeve mounted directly on the shaft end. Suitable for large-diameter shafts where mounting with an adapter sleeve is not feasible.
